About Timeblocks
Timeblocks is a screen-based data artwork examining how artificial intelligence constructs historical meaning. ChatGPT, Claude and Kimi independently interpreted every year from 1 to 2000 CE using the same methodology and a closed palette of 45 colors. Their 6,000 decisions form three aligned chromatic fields.
02 / THE PROTOCOL
Methodology
Each interpreter identifies a historical event, continuing process or broader condition for a year, then selects one color from the closed Timeblocks palette. The color family describes its historical character; the shade describes how that character manifested.
Interpretations are independent. Agreement and disagreement are part of the artwork, and there is no collectively correct color. Colors are selected for historical meaning, without quotas or adjustments for visual harmony.
Historical anchors, reasoning, confidence and dating uncertainty are retained as supplied. Confidence is the interpreter’s own score from 0 to 100, not an independently verified measure of accuracy. Years use conventional CE numbering, with no year zero.
The 2026 edition preserves ChatGPT, Claude and Kimi as three independent interpreters working under one shared protocol.
